Want to help? Be more specific.

Next time you want to support an overwhelmed colleague, trade the hollow phrase, “Let me know if I can help…” for something more thoughtful.

In its place, offer specific ways you can pitch in:

“I know there’s a lot going on right now. Just want you to know, if it helps, I would be happy to [insert one or more things you could do to potentially alleviate the person’s stress].”

This subtle but important upgrade shows you’re not just going through the motions.

It shows you’re willing to take an extra minute to consider the person’s situation and identify places you can offer support.

It’s small, but it’s big.
